Northeast Border Collie Rescue adoption process

Before a dog is accepted into NBCR, we do a thorough behavioral evaluation to identify any potential problems the dog might exhibit. We will not accept any dog with a known history of aggression. Each dog is then placed in one of our foster homes for a minimum of two weeks before it becomes available for adoption. This allows us the opportunity to get to know each dog personally so that we might match him with the most appropriate applicant It also gives us the time we need to have each dog examined by a veterinarian, spayed/neutered if required, brought up to date on all vaccinations, tested for heartworm/lyme and treated where necessary.

NBCR will not reject any Border Collie in needfor any physical disability, illness, or age related factors. While most of our available dogs are younger Border Collies, we often do accept older dogs who need our help. The Border Collie has a very long life span, typically 14 - 16 years of age, so a 10 year old Border Collie still has a lot of living to do and tons of love to give. Best of all, our older dogs generally don't require theintense levels of activity and stimulation our younger dogs need. We hope you will keep this in mind when considering our available dogs.

You should check our website frequently as different dogs are always coming into rescue as our current dogs move on to their new forever homes. We recommend that you complete the adoption application process now even if we don't currently have a dog that appeals to you. The process takes time and if you wait until a dog comes along that you like, you may lose a chance to adopt that dog to someone else who is already approved to adopt from us. Please follow the steps below to apply:

Adopting a Border Collie:

1. Complete and submit the adoption application form on our website. Note: we do check references!

2. We will contact you to arrange an appointment for your home visit once your application is approved. You must have a home visit before we will approve you to adopt a dog from us. We ask that your entire family be present for this visit.

3. Before you inquire about any specific dog, please carefully review the write-up on that dog. If we say a dog cannot live with children and you have children, we will not adopt that dog to you. Not all of our dogs will require a fenced yard, but If we say a dog requires a fence,we mean, at minimum, a four foot fence in good repair.

4. There is an adoption fee ranging between $250.00 - $350.00 for our Border Collies. This money goes directly to helping us rescue and pay for veterinary care for another dog. Please feel free to contact us for an explanation of the fee variance.

5. When you adopt a dog from us, there is a two week grace period in which you may return the dog and get a partial refund as per your adoption contract. After that, we encourage you to contact us at any time with updates, questions, or any concerns involving your dog. NBCR remains committed to you and the Border Collie you adopt from us for the lifetime of that dog. We are always available to offer advice, referrals, and any other assistance we can to you and your Border Collie.

Everyone in NBCR is a volunteer. Most of us work full-time jobs and so we ask you to be patient with us as we work to find you the best possible match with one of our Border Collies.
